Here's what the San Francisco Bay Area news media says about Bike to Work Day:
- Chronicle: Thousands gear up for Bike to Work Day.
On Thursday, almost 200 "energizer stations" will be set up in the Bay Area from Yountville (Napa County) to San Lorenzo during the morning and evening where cyclists can stop by to get something free to drink and eat, such as orange juice, bagels and bananas. Bike-related freebies will be handed out at several locations.

- InsideBayArea.com: Air Quality District unveils bike fleet. You might recall when the Bay Area Air Quality District banned bike riding on the job a few months back. The BAAQD bought liability insurance and bought bikes and helmets for employee use.
- Speaking of the Air Quality District, they announced that Bike To Work Day is also a Spare the Air Day. Sorry, commuters, there are no free rides in 2008 for Spare the Air.

- Palo Alto Daily News: Bike to Work Day promoters anticipate huge turnout.
...it's both a good & interesting situation that "bike to work day" draws as much mainstream media coverage as it does...there's a basic ramping up of energy for the whole week culminating in this "special day"...
ReplyDelete...but the unfortunate part is that it's only seen as a newsworthy "once a year event" rather than being recognized as the mainstay transportation method of so many people...
...one of the main points, we as cyclist's agree on, is that education is a huge factor in making our roads safe for all forms of cycling...i firmly believe the media is a huge untapped source that could be utilized for that means on a daily basis...but it seems we're really only newsworthy once a year other than when there are deaths or major confrontations (ie: critical mess)...
...it's rather a shame that the media's "responsibility" doesn't extend further than simply being "event recorders"...they could go a long way towards creating safer communities...
...anyway, just a thought & i tip my cycling cap to people like fritz & so many of you who regularly cycle-commute...i do what i can, when i can but there are plenty of extremely dedicated folks who deserve good praise & recognition...
