725 U.S. cyclists killed in 2004

The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released statistics of 2004 cyclist deaths and crashes. 725 cyclists died in traffic crashes, accounting for 2% of all traffic fatalities; another 41,000 were injured.

Cyclist fatalities occurred more frequently in urban areas (66%), at nonintersection locations (67%), between the hours of 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. (30%), and during the months of June, July, and August (36%). The average age of the victim was 38.7 years. 87% of the victims were male.

Alcohol involvement — either for the driver or the pedalcyclist — was reported in more than one-third of the traffic crashes that resulted in cyclist fatalities in 2004.

The NHTSA report breaks the statistics down further by state and with historical comparisons in this PDF document. Injury statistics are also provided.
