Suicide is no solution

Your horoscope: If you're feeling down and depressed and want to kill yourself, please don't use the train. It inconveniences thousands of people and we're not going to feel too kindly about your problems. Call a friend. If your friends aren't sympathetic, find new friends. If you can't find a friend, call a hotline or a mental health help line.

Jumping in front of a train just to make your girlfriend feel sorry for you only proves your ridiculous narcissistic selfishness in your so-called relationship. She doesn't exist just to serve your needs alone. She is not responsible for your happiness and well-being. Relationships are a two-way street requiring selflessness, sacrifice, and more empathy than your tiny frog brain is capable of.

  1. Yup. Permanent solution to a temporary problem. That person needed a bike, bad.

  2. Your amazing ignorance of Depression is obvious. It's not uncommon but obvious. If someone is willing jump in front of a train, then a relationship was probably just the trigger and something deeper was going on. Clinical, long term depression is becoming more common, or at least recognized more frequently. Unfortunately public knowledge is slower to catch up.

Read William Styron's "Darkness Visible." It's less than one hundred pages, and will shrink your ignorance and increase your knowledge.

  3. Fritz, I like dark sarcasm and this post perfectly makes its point.

  4. Thank you for the balancing comment, Paul. Rest assured that I have very personal knowledge of depression and the debilitating effects of that disease.

The guy who jumped in front of the train was stupidly drunk. No doubt he, like many people, attempt to treat themselves with alcohol and other drugs as well as sex and bad relationships.

I was selfishly angry when I posted my note. If you try to find happiness in self-medication and codependency and find yourself miserable, don't jump in front of a train -- go find help. Today.

  5. OK fritz, sorry if I sounded preachy (which in hindsight I did).

Self-medication certainly isn't healthy, but many suicide victims use drugs or alcohol (just a legal drug) to anesthetize themselves before the act. I can't pretend to know what was going on in the guy's head, nor can anyone, but blaming people with depressive syndromes for committing suicide is the same as blaming people with cancer for dying from tumors. Death isn't necessarily the outcome of either disease with good treatment, but sometimes good treatment fails and no treatment almost always does.

I'll get off my Penny Farthing now, it's just hard when you have lost people you care for.

I do enjoy the blog immensely.

  6. Maybe the guy just thought he OVERSTAYED his welcome with girlfriend.

I am certainly a firm believer some people OVERSTAY their welcome and probably should be converted to FOOD, aka Soylent Green.

But, yes, you are right. One man's suicide does NOT have to be an inconvenience for the rest of us.

Yahoo Answers suggest morphine is quite a painless way to get off. Hey, maybe the guy shoulda throw a going-away party so the rest of us could enjoy the food and fellowship?
