The Italian capital announced plans to offer a self service bike share program similar to the famous Velib bike share in Paris and other successful bike share programs modeled in Barcelona , Vienna, and Lyon.The initial six month pilot will include 250 bicycles distributed at 22 stations in the historic center of Rome. Eventually, promoters hope to make 20,000 rental bikes available throughout the city. “This experimental bike-sharing programme will make travelling in the centre of Rome easier, faster, economical and environmentally sound,” said Roman mayor Walter Veltroni.
The bike stations and bike rental program will be installed and managed by outdoor advertising firm Cemusa utilizing equipment and bikes from Bicincittá. (Bicincittá is "Bici in cittá," which means "Bike in town." Get it?)
