San Francisco State of Cycling

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency released its 2008 State of Cycling report this week. Some tidbits from this report:
  • From 2006 to 2008, the number of cyclists counted increased by 43% in San Francisco.
  • The number of female cyclists increased slightly from 25% to 27% from 2006 to 2008 after a slight dip in 2007.
  • Six percent of all trips in San Francisco are made by bicycle.
  • In San Francisco, over 60% of bike trips are for utilitarian purposes rather than leisure or fitness rides. Nationally, this figure is only 5%.
The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition and East Bay Bicycle Coalition all report record numbers of cyclists during yesterday's Bike To Work Day. A record 200,000 people rode their bikes to work in the San Francisco Bay Area on Thursday. On San Francisco's Market Street, bikes outnumbered cars two to one.
